Building Commissioning Testing and Verification

Using ACR data loggers to verify mechanical systems

Leading HVAC consulting engineering companies across North America use the SmartReader 2 to verify mechanical systems during testing/balancing and commissioning. Both new installation and retrofit of systems undergo this process.

Spot measurement alone is not adequate. Trend logging is required in cooling and heating modes, to verify proper operation. Chart recorders are still used to monitor temperature and relative humidity; however, they are losing their appeal. With numerous mechanical components and a high maintenance requirement, electronic data loggers are now replacing the chart recorder. Data loggers do the same job, but electronically.

Trend logging of temperature and relative humidity can be displayed in a graph or table format and then printed. To attain occupant comfort levels in a given area a temperature of 22°C +/- 1°C and a relative humidity of 50% +/- 5% need to be maintained; any deviation indicates system problems. Trend logging will reveal problems such as inadequate airflow, control valves reversed or jammed and faulty mechanical device sizing, etc.
